We wait in massive queues to fill up at one of the cheapest petrol stations in the UK but it’s worth it – here’s why

LONG waiting times and £15 a year – that’s all that’s required to buy fuel at one of the UK’s cheapest petrol stations.

In the latest fuel price figures, a litre of unleaded will set you back 152.96p, with diesel costing 175.75p per litre.

However, at the CostCo filling station in Thurmaston, Leicestershire, unleaded costs 140.9p a litre and diesel is 155.9p.

It should come as no surprise, then, that motorists are happy to sit back in the driver’ seat in snaking queues to nab a spot.

One local told LeicestershireLive: “I get diesel and I save about 11p a litre usually.

“The queues look long but I only spent a couple of minutes queuing this morning. I’ve been a member for about five years.”

Another was taken aback by the savings she bagged.

She said: “I know there are big queues most of the time but I didn’t realise it was the cheapest – that explains it!

“Costco is good for saving money but in the store you do have to buy lots – you need to get stuff that won’t go off. I only get fuel here when it’s convenient, really, and I didn’t even realise there was a petrol station here until after I joined.”

Another woman, who didn’t want to give her name, said: “It’s a lot cheaper here and the stuff in the shop is a lot cheaper too, so you save quite a bit. I’ve no idea how much exactly but I’m sure it’s worth it.

“I’ve been a member for seven years and I always try to time it so I come when the queues for petrol aren’t too long.”

Reliance on energy imports from Russia mean that fuel prices have soared over the past year as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
