I compared Tesco, Lidl & M&S to see which offers the best bargains for basic items – & people say one’s a total rip-off

A MONEY-SAVING shopper has compared the prices of basic everyday items in three popular stores – Tesco, Marks and Spencer and rival, Lidl.

We all have a favourite supermarket we go to when doing the weekly grocery shop – but does your top pick offer the best bargains?

To find out, one TikTok user, Kathryn Leech (@katsaves), set out to see where to nab basic items, such as bread and milk, for the lowest price.

”Let’s see how Tesco, Lidl and M&S actually compare,” she said in the video.

Bread

First up, Kathryn looked at the bread selection at each store.

The cheapest one she could find in M&S cost 85p, while Lidl offered one that was just 79p.

The most expensive, however, was Tesco – a loaf of their Wholewheat Medium bread was almost a pound, scanning for 95p at the till.

Milk

Next, the money-saving whizz compared the different prices of milk.

If you’re shopping at M&S, a jug of semi-skimmed milk will set you back by £1.30 – and the same goes for Lidl, Kathryn discovered.

Tesco, again, was a tad bit more expensive – the store charges £1.40 for the same product.

Butter

Whilst shopping in the dairy section, Kathryn also looked at the price tags of butter.

Whether you fancy unsalted or salter butter, Marks & Spencer sells 250g of the product for £2.

The cheapest option in Lidl, on the other hand, is just 1p less, scanning for £1.99.

However, if you want to save some money, it’s best to steer clear of Tesco – the lowest priced butter came in at £2.10.

”It is not looking good for Tesco so far,” Kathryn chuckled in the video.

Cheese

The fourth everyday item the shopper compared was cheese.

A block of mature cheddar will cost you £2.90 in M&S, whereas a slightly bigger block of the same product retails for £2.79 in Lidl.

The most expensive here was Tesco again – the brand charges its customers an eye-watering £3.60.

Eggs

Last up in the video were eggs, a staple for those who fancy a hearty fry-up.

Marks & Spencer store, Kathryn revealed, offers a pack of six free range eggs for a quid, while Lidl charges £1.29 for the same amount of medium-sized eggs.

Meanwhile, a box of six eggs will set you back by £1.60 when doing the shop in Tesco.

”Are you surprised at the price difference between 3 shops that are literally next to each other on the street?” the shopper wondered.

Seeing the difference in pricing, dozens flocked to comments to share their thoughts and observations – and indeed, it was not good news for Tesco.

One exclaimed: ”Tescos been a rip off for years [sic].”

Another noted: ”m&s and lidls have pretty much have the same price but i bet the m&s quality is better [sic].”

”even though m&s has similar price as Lidl, it super easy to accidentally grab other high price items in m&s and the price just go up crazy,” a third reckoned.

”thing is, m&s would feel like it was better even if it wasn’t cheaper. but I wouldn’t be able to come out without Percy pigs as well!!!” someone else chuckled.
