The Cabinet Minister insisted: “The Falkland Islands are British.

“Islanders have the right to decide their own future.

“They have chosen to remain a self-governing UK Overseas Territory.”

His counterpart Santiago Cafiero said he was bringing the 2016 agreement to an end to improve co-operation on South Atlantic issues of mutual interest.

He said he wanted discussions on the islands’ future.

Argentina believes it holds sovereignty of the islands which were subject to a war in 1982.

The Falklands War claimed the lives of 255 British military personnel.

Foreign Office Minister David Rutley added he was disappointed that Argentina had decided to step away from the agreement.
