VEGGIE CHILLI: Make a budget veggie chilli and freeze it. Keep in a cool box for the journey to your caravan and reheat when fully thawed as one of your first holiday meals.

The studenteats.co.uk recipe is simple. Use Asda’s plant-based frozen mince, £2, two onions from 1kg bag, 95p, and two tins of Just Essentials kidney beans, 33p, two tins of tomatoes, 35p each.

Make your own spice mix from your spice rack or pick up the Asda chilli con carne mix, 40p. Use spare onions with a BBQ dinner.

Total cost: £4.71

PERFECT PESTO: Make pesto before you go with a bunch of basil, 52p, a handful of mixed nuts, £1.69, and half a block of Grana Padano cheese, £2.05, all at Aldi.

Add a dash of oil and blend. Keep in a jar or tub to take with you and stir into freshly boiled Aldi’s Everyday Essentials pasta, 41p, for a quick, delicious healthy meal. Grate the rest of the cheese on top, save nuts for snacking.

Total cost: £4.67

EASY RAGU: Follow the simple aubergine ragu recipe at thriftylesley.com/aubergine-ragu.

Take two aubergines, 85p each, 300g fresh tomatoes, £1.25, and you could bulk it up a tin of tomatoes, 60p each, and garlic, 55p, all at Tesco.

You will also need store cupboard essentials — oil, salt and pepper. It’s a brilliant dish to cook ahead and freeze in batches for the family. Serve with sliced buttered bread, 45p, also Tesco.

Total cost: £4.55

PULLED PORK: Use a slow cooker and add a 1.45kg pork shoulder joint, £4.70, Sainsbury’s and a can of Coca-Cola, approx £1.

Cook on low heat for 8-10 hours and shred. Either take it with you in a container and reheat, or freeze it to thaw and eat later.

Serve with a pack of brioche burger buns, £1.05 for four and a can of coke.

Total cost: £6.75All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
