Constance Marten and partner’s baby could have been dead for 2 weeks after couple seen buying fish & chips before arrest

CONSTANCE Marten’s missing baby could have been dead for at least two weeks, a source claims.

A police insider says the aristocrat and her partner Mark Gordon feasted on fish and chips as far back as February 11.

But CCTV from the time shows they were never seen with their baby on the trip into Brighton.

They also frequented the Mulberrys convenience store on the night-time visits into the East Sussex town.

The shop is where they were spotted withdrawing cash by a member of the public who called 999, and the couple were nicked six minutes later.

A source said they had visited J & E Fish Bar in the weeks before – and they only visited the parade of shops in Hollingbury Place at night.

They told The Sun: “They’ve been picked up on CCTV in the area as far back as February 11.

“They’ve been seen going into the chippy and into the Mulberrys, and would only go out at night.

“Gordon has a leg injury and was using the tree branch as a walking stick.

“They were never seen with the baby, or pushing a pram or anything like that.

“It’s heartbreaking to think what might’ve happened to that poor baby.

“I’m just praying they can find it safely.”

It comes as runaways Marten and Gordon – currently in custody – refuse to tell cops where the baby is, or even disclose its gender.

The aristocrat and her partner were arrested on Monday without their baby after 54 days on the run.

It came as a resident tipped the police off after spotting the pair arguing aggressively as they walked back from shops with bags of food.

On Tuesday, Marten and Gordon were further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

The specific charge gives police the power to detain the couple for a longer period of time while they are questioned.

On Wednesday, officers looked under bushes and behind trees in Wild Park, Brighton, for the infant who police say may have “come to serious harm”.

They are part of a 200-strong team scouring a vast 91-square mile area across East Sussex.

Search dogs, thermal imaging cameras, drones and helicopters are also in the area as police frantically search for the infant.

As well as Wild Park, searches are also taking place around Stanmer Villas, near where the pair were arrested, and Roedale Valley Allotments, both in Brighton.

The pair left their home in Eltham, South East London, sometime in September 2022, and began a nomadic lifestyle.

Before they vanished, it is thought Marten withdrew £15,000 of cash from an ATM.

The couple’s car was found on fire on January 5 on the M61 near Bolton, Lancashire – it is thought Constance gave birth in the vehicle or near it in the days surrounding the incident.

They were then spotted on CCTV at various locations across Liverpool, London, Essex and East Sussex.

Following the pair’s disappearance, police told how the aristocrat became estranged from her family after meeting Gordon when she was a drama student in 2016.

The daughter of Napier Martin, a former page to the Queen, and granddaughter of Mary Anna Marten, whose godmother was the Queen Mother, Constance comes from a family of wealthy landowners.

She was deemed an ‘it girl’ when she appeared on upmarket mag Tatler’s babe of the month page while she was a student in 2008.
